How Insurance Works: Harvest Family Dental

How Does My Insurance Work?

At Harvest Family Dentistry we are preferred providers for many insurances. Please check out our list of insurance for which we are preferred providers (PPO).

Insurance can be very confusing. We want you to get the greatest benefit from your insurance, so here is a brief description of how it works. Often prospective patients call and ask “ do you take my insurance”. At Harvest Family Dentistry the answer is yes, but that's not enough to really understand. Most offices will “take” you insurance. Below is a brief description of the three ways in which insurance can be filed.

The three main ways dental insurance works:

  1. The dentist does the treatment for his standard fee. The patient then pays the standard fee upfront. The patient can then send the proper forms to their insurance company to receive reimbursement as seen fit by their insurance.
    1. This is the least common way and is the most difficult for the patient.

  2. The dentist does the treatment for his standard fee. The office then files the patients' insurance for them. This is what many offices mean when they say they “take” your insurance. The patient pays an estimated portion of the standard fees and anything remaining after the insurance pays the office.
    1. This may be the most common type of office. The cost will be the same for the patient as type 1.

  3. The dentist does the treatment for a reduced fee negotiated by your insurance company. The office then files the patient's insurance for them. This is what's known as being a preferred provider for your insurance. The patient pays an estimated portion of the reduced fees and anything remaining after the insurance pays the office.
    1. This type of office is the most cost effective for the patient. A patient will have less out of pocket cost with this style than ways 1 and 2.
